Understanding the Legal Mandate of the German Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)
Under Section 16b of the German Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz), every non-EU student seeking a national visa to pursue higher education in Germany must prove financial capability for at least the first 12 months of their stay. The official benchmark is anchored to the federal student financial aid rate (BAföG).
For the 2025/2026 academic period, the statutory minimum stands at €992 per month, culminating in a mandatory total balance of €11,904. This sum is held in escrow in an authorized European financial institution. Once activated after arrival in Germany, the account unlocks precisely €992 on the first working day of each calendar month.
Crucially, students cannot withdraw the full amount at once. This mechanism ensures that Pakistani students do not face destitution, evictions, or emergency deportation while adjusting to rigorous academic semesters at German universities.
If your visa application is refused by the German Embassy Islamabad or Consulate General Karachi, your entire blocked principal is refunded directly back to the original sending bank account in Pakistan upon submitting the embassy refusal letter (Ablehnungsbescheid).
Never transfer funds through third-party agents or freelance money changers. The German mission strictly investigates the audit trail of funds. Any mismatch between the remitter name on the SWIFT message and the applicant or their verified first-degree sponsor can lead to immediate visa rejection under document forgery provisions.
